A GPU is a co-processor that takes on Graphical calculations and transformations so that the main Central Processing Unit does not have to be burdened and transformations so Graphic Processing Unit can greatly increase the performance of a device, especially when used for tasks such as 3D Gaming.
A Graphic Processing Unit can be a stand-alone chip or, as is more often the case, Integrated into a complete chipdesign that includes one or more Central Processing Units. for example Nvidia's GeForce and the adreno by Qualcomm used in the mobile industry
